Overview

If you're aiming for a career in medicine or life sciences—such as optometry, biomedical science, neuroscience, radiography, pharmacy, or dentistry—the Access to HE Diploma (Medicine) is your pathway to university study.
Designed for adults returning to education, this course is ideal if you’re changing career, building confidence after a study gap, or lacking formal qualifications. It provides the academic foundation and study skills needed to progress into higher education.
The diploma is validated by Ascentis and fully recognised by the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA). Developed in collaboration with UK medical schools, it aligns with the QAA Subject Descriptor for Medicine, ensuring national recognition and credibility.
Successful completion opens doors to a wide range of degree programmes, including Medicine, Dentistry, Nursing, Midwifery, Pharmacology, Biomedical Science, Biochemistry, and Forensic Science, among others.
During the course, you’ll study a range of science-based modules, including:
• Biology • Chemistry • Physics • Mathematics

The Diploma structure includes:
• 24 Graded Credits in Biology • 15 Graded Credits in Chemistry • 9 Graded Credits in Physics
• 12 Ungraded Credits (for skills-based and study preparation units)

The course is validated by Ascentis and fully recognised by QAA. It’s delivered over one academic year (32–36 weeks) and designed to prepare you for university-level study in medicine and related health sciences.
Applicants who wish to progress to a degree in Medicine or Dentistry will be expected to have taken the UCAT (University Clinical Aptitude Test) before joining the Access course.

We also welcome applications from individuals with relevant health or social care experience, including those who have worked in care settings or supported family members with disabilities or long-term health needs.

5. Pathogens, Diseases and Prevention - 3 credits
6. Immunity and the immune response - 3 credits
7. Aspects of Human Physiology - 6 credits
8. Anatomy and physiology of human skeleton and muscles - 3 credits
9. ICT Skills - 3 credits
10. Pharmacology - 3 credits
11. Core Principles of Chemistry - 6 credits
12. Fundamentals of Chemistry for Medicine - 6 credit
13. Fundamentals of Chemistry- 3 credits
14. Principles of Physics - 6 credits
15. Fundamentals of Physics for Medicine -3 credits

Entry Requirements

• Must be 19 or over.
• GCSE Grade 4/C or above in English, Maths, and two Sciences.
• Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths (or equivalent international qualifications) accepted.
• Applicants without the required GCSEs can study Level 2 credits with UK Versity to meet university entry requirements.
