Overview
This qualification gives learners the digital skills they need for real life — both for everyday tasks like online banking, government services, and personal communication, and for the workplace where basic digital competence is now essential. You will demonstrate understanding and practical competency in using devices and handling information, creating and editing digital content, communicating digitally, transacting online, and staying safe and responsible on the internet.
Who is it suitable for?
The qualification is designed for anyone aged 14 or over who wants to build confidence with digital tools and gain a nationally recognised certificate of digital competence. It works equally well for adults returning to study, jobseekers needing digital skills for employment, learners with limited prior IT exposure, and anyone preparing to progress to the Level 2 Certificate in Digital Skills for Work.

Mandatory Units
All five units are required to achieve the qualification.
• Unit 01 Using Devices and Handling Information
• Unit 02 Creating and Editing
• Unit 03 Communicating
• Unit 04 Transacting
• Unit 05 Being Safe and Responsible Online
Assessment
This qualification is externally set and externally marked. It has two assessment sections:
Section 1 (Knowledge): externally set and marked multiple-choice and short-answer paper, completed under externally assessed conditions.
Section 2 (Skills): externally set, task-based assessment, completed under externally assessed conditions.
Unlike most NCFE qualifications, this is an exam-based Functional Skills qualification. Learners are supported throughout by their UK Versity tutor before sitting the externally assessed components.
Entry Requirements
• Must be 14 or over
• No prior qualifications required
• Access to a laptop, desktop, or tablet with reliable internet
• A Level 1 qualification in any subject can be helpful but is not essential
Progressions
On completion of this qualification, learners typically progress to:
• Level 2 Certificate in Digital Skills for Work
• Entry-level employment in administrative, customer service, or other roles requiring digital competence
• Further study at Level 2 in related subjects
• Apprenticeships, where Functional Skills are a common entry requirement
Digital Functional Skills are widely recognised by employers, apprenticeship providers, and further education colleges as evidence of essential digital competence.
Certification
The NCFE Level 1 Digital Functional Skills qualification is awarded by NCFE.
